Banana blossom, which is also known as ‘Kalar mocha’, is often found at the end of the full-bloomed banana bunch. This blossom can be cut from the banana bunch without any harm to the tree or banana growth. It makes tasty food ingredients and can be cooked or made the salad in different ways. Many countries make different recipes with banana blossoms. Here I will describe two banana blossom recipes those are banana blossom fry and mashed banana blossom recipes (bharta).

Banana blossom recipes: Mocha Fry
Banana blossom has a lot of medicinal value, especially for blood purification and curing menstrual disorders, stomach ulcers, and constipation. In addition, it is rich in vitamin A and vitamin C. You can take banana blossom as a medicine. Fresh banana blossom’s taste is the streak, but after boiling this taste will be gone.
Fried Banana Blossom
Ingredients
- 1 piece of banana blossom (mocha)
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 4-5 pieces green chilies
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon ginger paste
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon oil
- 100 gm prawn small size
Instructions
- Open layers of flower bunches from the blossom and separate red skin. Remove the hard stick and thin white part from every flower’s inner part. Cut the inner part to small (about ½ inch) sizes. Boil blossom’s inner part with turmeric powder and a little bit of salt. After 5 minutes, drain out water from the boiled banana blossom. Wash with normal water. Rinse it very well. Keep aside.
- Clean and wash small size of prawn. Keep it aside.
- Heat oil in a non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Add turmeric powder, cumin powder, chili powder, ginger paste, and salt to the oil. Add prawn to the spices. Cook the prawns for 2 to 3 minutes. Add boiled banana blossom and green chilies with bloomed spices. Stir it and cover it with a lid. Cook the blossom over medium heat. Fry it until dry.
- Turn off the burner and take out the mocha fry in a serving dish. Banana blossom recipes mocha (blossom) fry is ready to eat.
Notes
Tips: Serve the banana blossom fry with rice.
Preparation before cooking of banana mocha fry needs a bit cautious, as the center stick of each flower is to be removed prior to slicing. You need more time for this session. However, the main frying part of the banana blossom is very easy that anyone can do.

Mashed Banana Blossom (vorta)
Banana blossom which is also known as ‘Kalar mocha’ can make various delicious food. In this recipe, it is used for making a tasty bhorta (grind paste with spices). As the banana blossom has a lot of medicinal value, the bhorta is also considered as a supplement for the treatment of menstrual disorders, stomach ulcers, and constipation. Although the bhorta does not give a very attractive look, it has rich in vitamin A and vitamin C.
Like other bharta, you need to make the paste using pestle and mortar, which need a little bit of orientation with these hand tools. However, the main frying part of bhorta is very easy that anyone can do.
Ingredients for mashed blossom recipes
- 1 piece banana mocha (blossom)
- 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 2 tablespoons onion
- 1 teaspoon cumin powder
- 1 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon oil
Process for mashed banana blossom
Step 1
Open layers of flower bunches from the blossom and separate red skin. Remove the hard stick and thin white part from every flower’s inner part. Boil blossom’s inner part with ½ tsp turmeric powder. After 5 minutes drain out water from the boiled banana blossom.
Step 2
Smash the boiled banana flower with pestle and mortar and make a paste.
Step 3
Heat oil in a pan on the burner. Add the rest of the turmeric powder, cumin powder, onion, chili powder, and salt. Add the paste banana blossom and stir until the mix is dry.
- Take out of the pan and serve with rice.
